English and Ukrainian Holidays

  • In March there is also a holiday for English women — Mother’s Day. People in the family try to make it a day off for Mother and help her in any way they can. On that day they visit their mothers and give them some presents. If they can’t do it they send their mothers “Mother’s Day card”.
  • In April or at the end of March people celebrate Easter Day. They celebrate it as the start of spring or a religious festival. In England it is time to give and get presents. On Easter Sunday children get chocolate Easter eggs or rabbits. The Easter holidays are at the end of March and in the first half of April. School children go back to school after Easter.
  • In June, the English people celebrate Father’s Day, when children send cards and give presents to their fathers.
  • On the 25th of December there is the greatest holiday of all in England — Christmas. People give each other presents and send Christmas cards. School children have their Christmas holidays. Most of the banks, offices and industrial enterprises close for holidays too. The traditional English dinner on Christmas Day is roast turkey and Christmas pudding.
  • On the 31st of October there is a nice holiday for children — Halloween. People put pumpkins on the window sills. They carve eyes, noses and mouths on the pumpkins and put candles in them, making the pumpkins appear to have a face. Children dress up in funny costumes, and go from house to house collecting candy.
  • People decorate their houses and usually have a fir-tree which stands in the corner of the room. Those fir-trees are very beautiful. The presents are usually put under these trees. Our parents prepare to this holiday well. They buy a New Year tree, decorate it, buy a lot of tasty food and drinks.
  • Ivana Kupala Day is the day of summer solstice celebrated in Russia and Ukraine on the 7th of July. The girls sing special songs (“kupalni”), with a lot of references to love and marriage. They also put a burning candle in the middle of a flower garland and float it on the water and tell their fortunes from the behavior of the garland in the water.
  • St. Nicholas’ Day was a time of great fun in Ukraine. On this day, people would invite guests in and sleighs would be ridden around the village to see if the snow was slippery (icy). This was the holiday for young children, for they would receive gifts from St. Nicholas, the patron saint of children. “St. Nicholas” was often accompanied by “angels” and might have quizzed the children on their catechism. St. Nicholas Day, not Christmas, is the usual gift-giving day in much of Europe including Ukraine, although for Christmas it was the custom of all members in the family to get a new article of clothing.
  • This is a holiday of both joy and sorrow. A great tribute is bestowed to those who gave their lives during World War II. Veterans gather together remembering those who perished. People go to the Monuments to put flowers.
  • In England, Shrove Tuesday is the day for pancakes. At home, families have pancakes to dinner. At school, the children and teachers have pancakes for school dinner, and in restaurants customers often ask for pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year and falls between 3 February and 9 March.
