Ukrainian Day of Physical Culture and Sport is marked with sporting competitions, tournaments and championships, marathons, relay races, special lessons at schools, and other appropriate activities and events. Students congratulate their PE teachers on their professional holiday, and distinguished athletes are awarded for their achievements.
The most popular sports in Ukraine are football, basketball, boxing, ice hockey, artistic gymnastics, and rhythmic gymnastics. Renowned Ukrainian athletes include (but are not limited to) Volodymyr and Vitaliy Klitchsko, Lilia Podkopayeva, Irina Deriugina, Andriy Shevchenko, Serhiy Bubka, Oleh Blokhin, Yana Klochkova, Vita and Valj Semerenko, and others.
Ukrainian athletes have been participating at the Olympic Games since 1994. As of 2015, they have won 115 medals at the Summer Olympics (33 gold, 27 silver, 55 bronze) and 7 medals at the Winter Olympics (2 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze).
